Tibetan monks shot in Tibet on a 5 week expedition.
Left Image: The Johkang Temple is the epicenter of the epicenter to Tibetan Buddhism. Each afternoon hundreds of Tibetans congregate to meditate and pray. This monk was in the midst of a deep meditation pouring barley kernels over a golden chalice that gave off an enchanting twinkling sound that I recorded with my digital sound recorder. I wasn’t sure if it was the 12000 ft. elevation or what but I felt high. I looked at him and as if he was looking somewhere into the center of my soul, without a word, he visually gave me the go ahead to take his picture. I shot this from about 12 inches from his chalice, almost touching him. RIGHT IMAGE: Four hours east of Lhasa on the road to Kailash is Tashilempo Monastery, the largest active monastery in Tibet. This is the home of the Panchen Lama. I heard that the young monks would be chanting in the afternoon. About 75 8-14 year old boys showed up in there Yellow Hats like typcial boisterous and jovial kids, frolickin in their daily chores. With daylight sneaking under the eaves fo teh mondestary and a little fill light I shot this boy who to has the face of a little Buddha, contemplating a deep question or thought.
